Outboard price conflict

Mo-Dog 94	I'm just curious, I have been looking at a lot of ads for used outboard motors from dealers and individual owners, and have noticed that their sale prices are noticably higher than what is listed in NADA-guides, and other blue book type guides. Any idea why? Anybody out there had any experience buying refurbished lease model outboards from dealers or iboats.com ???	2002-09-13

hw8478	What you find in any guide is just that, a guide. The price you set should depend on how you assess the demand for your motor, how quickly you want to sell it and the time of year in many places. A motor you couldn't sell for peanuts in November may bring top dollar in May depending on where you live. Best bet is to put on the cloth of a buyer and hit the dealers in your area and ask if they have a used ^%$^ for sale and if they do not what would they ask for it if they had it.	2002-09-14
BillP	My guess is the outboard dealers use "high" books for selling and "low" books for buying. Just like the auto biz. Retail in one book is wholesale in another. Figure the lowest price you can find is what a dealer pays and the highest price what he sells for.	2002-09-15
Bob_VT	Simple answer. Supply and Demand! If someone "needs" a new motor they will pay a premium. Towards the end of a season (or off season is even better!) is usually a good time to buy. Sell at the beginning of a season for better profit/price. Bob	2002-09-15
