Power Tilt and Trim

DEFisher I have a 1992 Tracker Panfish 16 with a 40 HP Evinrude. It has the original hydraulic cylinder as a lift assist for the motor. It is extremely hard to lift this motor if the lower unit gets in the mud. I have to get out of the boat and use both hands around the prop to just get the motor to come up. Then it is near impossible to trip the lever. Has anyone put one of the aftermarket Power Tilt and Trim units on a similar setup. If so what brand. Also looking at Cabelas and Bass Pro they want $450 for one, is there any other sources. 2003-01-04
snapperbait I insalled the CMC brand trim & tilt (from Bass Pro) on my Dads 15' bass boat with a 60 Evinrude a few years ago... It worked very well...

Don't know about any others...

roscoe I saw one of the Minn Kota units on a boat this fall. Guy said it was a Godsend compared to lifting by hand. Also costs in the $500 range. 2003-01-05
djohns19 DEFisher,

You may have a dead or damaged gas assist cylinder. Try unhooking the cylinder and then tilting the engine. If it's easier, just replace that cylinder.

I don't know your model number, but if you look at the link below, you should be able to find your Model # and order a new gas assist cylinder, which will solve your problem. Unless of course, you would rather put your money toward a CMC T&T unit. I would personally get the power T&T unit, if money allows. The assist cylinder is about $250.00 to replace, as opposed to $400.00-$500.00 for power T&T.

djohns19 DEFisher,

Rick makes an excellent point. I did not realize that the gas assist cylinder was that much $$$.

It would be hard for me not to go with the power unit for 1/2 again as much.

OutboardJim You may also check with a Johnson/Evinrude dealer. The OEM TNT is a neat little unit that tucks right in where the power assist cylinder is. Few more bucks too. It will also be hard to beat a Bass-Pro price.

DEFisher Thanks to all who have responded. I'll be looking for the aftermarket T&T. It'll be cheaper than a ruptured disk. 2003-01-05
